-
- Your system must be running IRIX release 6.5, and the UUCP
- and PPP software must be installed to use the ISDN software.
- ISDN is supported only on Indy, O2, and OCTANE systems.
-
- +o To check your IRIX release level, open a shell window
- by choosing "Unix Shell" from the Desktop toolchest,
- then type:
-
- uuuunnnnaaaammmmeeee ----aaaa
-
- You'll see a message similar to this:
-
- IIIIRRRRIIIIXXXX <_h_o_s_t_n_a_m_e> 6666....5555 00001111222288882222111100007777 IIIIPPPP33332222
-
- This sample message shows that version 6.5 is
- installed.
-
- +o To check whether the UUCP and PPP subsystems are
- installed, type:
-
- vvvveeeerrrrssssiiiioooonnnnssss eeeeooooeeee....sssswwww....uuuuuuuuccccpppp eeeeooooeeee....sssswwww....pppppppppppp
-
- If they're both installed, you see these lines:
-
- IIII eeeeooooeeee....sssswwww....pppppppppppp <<<<ddddaaaatttteeee>>>> PPPPooooiiiinnnntttt----ttttoooo----PPPPooooiiiinnnntttt PPPPrrrroooottttooooccccoooollll SSSSooooffffttttwwwwaaaarrrreeee

-
- (Notice the ``I'' at the beginning of the line.) If
- either one is not installed, install it along with your
- ISDN software as shown in the next section.

-
- All subsystems in this product can be installed using the
- IRIX installation method, which means they can be installed
- while your system is up and running. The software
- installation instructions included here provide a quick
- overview of how to install the software from a CD drive
- that's connected directly to your system. To install it
- from a remote CD, or for more detailed information, see
- Chapter 4 of the online _P_e_r_s_o_n_a_l _S_y_s_t_e_m _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n
- _G_u_i_d_e, or see the _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_o_r'_s
- _G_u_i_d_e.

- then press <Enter>. If a prompt appears but the root
- account has no password, just press <Enter>.
-
- 2. Install the software:
-
- +o Insert the IRIX 6.5 CD into your CD drive.
-
- +o In the shell window, type:

- 3. Update the system software (the kernel) with the newly
- installed software by typing:
-
- ////eeeettttcccc////aaaauuuuttttooooccccoooonnnnffffiiiigggg
-
- The system software will be updated when you restart
- your system after configuring the ISDN software.
-
- The software is now installed, but is not yet configured for
- use. Use the information in the online _I_S_D_N _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e to:
-
- +o Order the necessary ISDN hardware and services.
-
- +o Set up the ISDN hardware.
-
- +o Configure the ISDN software.
-
- +o Use your ISDN connection.
-
- To view the online _I_S_D_N _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e, follow these steps:
-
- 1. Choose ``On-Line Books'' from the Help toolchest.
-
- 2. In the IRIS InSight Library window, double-click the
- book on the SGI_EndUser bookshelf that's entitled
- ``ISDN User's Guide''.
-
- 3. For more information on using the online book, choose
- a topic from its Help menu.
-
- You may find it helpful to print out Chapter 2 of the online
- book, as it covers hardware setup that you may want to
- perform while the system is powered off.

-
- Verify that ISDN has been certified in your country before
- connecting your to an ISDN line. Connecting uncertified
- ISDN equipment to your national ISDN network may be a
- violation of local law.
-
- ISDN is not a "plug-and-play" technology. The online _I_S_D_N
- _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e is an excellent source of information on how to
- configure and use ISDN. To access the online book, choose
- ``On-Line Books'' from the Help toolchest, then double-click
- the book's icon.
-
- 2.8.1 _I_n_d_y The ISDN port is on the back of the Indy and is
- labeled with an icon of a telephone. It may be covered with
- a sticker with a red triangle on it. Remove the sticker
- when you are ready to connect the Indy to the NT1. See the
- _I_n_d_y _W_o_r_k_s_t_a_t_i_o_n _O_w_n_e_r_s _G_u_i_d_e if you are still unsure where
- the ISDN port is. See the online _I_S_D_N _U_s_e_r_s'_s _G_u_i_d_e for
- detailed instructions on how to connect the Indy to the NT1.
